Grayson Aka Gracie Cockatoo Senior - Adoption, Rescue for sale in Elizabeth, Colorado

Grayson (formerly Gracie) and Gladys, a handsome and beautifully feathered pair of Moluccan cockatoos, were transferred to TGF in 2013 from Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region. Both birds had been housed together though the former owner thought they were both girls. Not so-and Gracie became Grayson. During their time with us, they have been awesome birds. They adore outside time in their flight, in the sun in the light rain, even on a day that's cool, sunny without wind. Bath-time is a special favorite with all feathers spread as wide as possible to enjoy every drop of water, and sometimes hanging upside down is the best way to catch it all. Their appetite is "too much is never enough", and they are some of the best eaters we have ever had. Enrichment is critical. They saw through wood, through their plastic and take apart toys. Give them a cardboard box to shred, and you'll have confetti soon. You can add those paper bits to your compost heap! Give them a large piece of a 2x4, or a piece of dry pine firewood, and repurpose the shredded chunks for your other, smaller birds. They are member of the elite clean bowl club. Both step up, like people, and are happy to celebrate joy in front of an camera or a live audience. On the loudness scale - when they feel good, they vocalize like most Moluccans - loudly. In our experience, their overall vocalizations are less frequent than some of the more "needy" 'toos who were used to being held all of the time. This pair must be adopted together. They have shared each other's companionship, comfort and reliability for many years. Each has his/her own relationship with people. Grayson and Gladys were in a marvelous foster home for over a year. With all of her other birds, high school kids and a professional career, the decision was made to return them to us. They thrived during that year, and had the benefit of plenty of outdoor time, ground time on the grass, and the benefit of a dedicated caregiver. To keep this pair together it is critical for them to have the largest cage possible, a large supply of wood, and creative (homemade) enrichment, puzzles to work their brains, and a safe place for them to spend outside. They enjoy their people time, and one bird at a time has not been stressful for them. These two are not suitable for a condo or apartment, or any housing where neighbors are very close, unless the neighbors are compatible with the sounds of animals, kids, some barking dogs and visitors originating from the wilds of Indonesia. Both Grayson and Gladys have spent time around other species of birds. It's important to provide a quality Hepa air filter for the home, and especially if macaws are in the house. Questions, ask us!
